Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics
Our Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) laboratory performs HLA typing, crossmatching, and HLA antibody screening in support of haemotopoetic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) as well as renal and pancreas transplantation.
Our H&I laboratory also performs HLA typing to aid in the diagnosis of disease including:
- HLA-B typing to aid in the diagnosis of Ankylosing spondylitis (HLA-B27 associated) and Behcets (HLA-B51).
- HLA-DQ typing to aid in the diagnosis of Coeliac disease (HLA-DQ2, DQ8) and narcolepsy (HLA-DQ6).
HLA-B57 typing is also performed prior to administration of the anti-retroviral drug Abacavir, with HLA- B*57:01 positivity conferring a high risk of a hypersensitivity reaction.
Additionally, in support of renal and pancreas transplantation, our H&I laboratory provides a 24 hour, 365 day out-of-hours service for HLA donor typing and crossmatching.
