Delivering Science Supporting Healthcare

National Apprenticeship Week 2026

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the inspiring journeys of our colleagues who have built their skills, confidence, and careers through a range of apprenticeship programmes. As an award‑winning organisation recognised for our commitment to high‑quality training initiatives, we know that investing in people is essential to delivering exceptional diagnostic services. This week, we’re excited to share the stories of those who have embraced learning, grown in their roles, and helped us continue raising the standard of care for our patients.

Veronica, Senior Biomedical Scientist

When I took on the role of team leader in 2020, I did not have any official documentation to demonstrate my leadership skills. The only experience that I had was from observing my leaders throughout my career journey emulating their good examples or sought their advice when I executed my role. I had always wanted to sign up to a leadership course and had expressed it in my PDRS. When I learnt that my employer NWLP were supporting leadership apprenticeships I quickly signed up for one of the courses to equip me with skills required in leading people. Now I can demonstrate and apply all that I learnt during my leadership apprenticeship without having to guess or to consult other people.

Tawe, Blood Transfusion Manager

I chose to undertake the Level 7 Leadership Apprenticeship to strengthen my strategic leadership skills and support the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient Blood Transfusion services. Recognising the increasing complexity of the healthcare environment, I wanted to enhance my ability to lead teams, drive quality improvement, and align service objectives with wider NHS priorities. The apprenticeship provided a structured framework to apply advanced leadership concepts directly to my role.

Suzan, Network Rapid Molecular Lead

I completed the Healthcare Leaders’ Fellowship, Operations or Departmental Manager Level 5, which is a leadership apprenticeship. For me, this was not just about studying; it was about combining learning with my day-to-day work and leading real projects at the same time.

The apprenticeship showed me that while some skills are best developed and refined through hands-on experience, others benefit from being taught in a structured learning environment. This formal approach gives your actions a recognised and professional foundation. I would recommend apprenticeships to colleagues at all levels and across departments, as they build confidence and enhance opportunities for development in the role.

Arathi, Senior Biomedical Scientist

Being a senior BMS comes with responsibility which involves managing team and also oneself. CMI level 5 apprenticeship has not only given me an insight into my strengths and weakness but also has improved my management and personal skills. Which are important in building a great team.

Madonna, Senior Biomedical Scientist

I’ve decided to take CMI level 5 apprenticeship to develop, enhance my leadership skills and improve my strategic thinking. One of the most valuable takeaway from the apprenticeship for me, was the Project Management. This made me more methodical and confident in managing projects.
