The Specialist Proteins laboratory provides a substantial service to four hospital sites, as well as accepting samples from several referring laboratories. We routinely analyse large numbers of serum and urine samples for electrophoresis and immunofixation, using up-to-date technologies, including capillary zone electrophoresis.
Other routine analyses include cryoglobulins, serum free light chains, apolipoproteins (ApoA, ApoB and Lp(a), immunoglobulins, alpha-1 antitrypsin and beta-2 microglobulin. CSF analysis includes oligoclonal studies and investigation of CSF leaks using the measurement of beta-2 transferrin. We regularly analyse a series of isoenzymes, including alkaline phosphatase and creatine kinase (for the quantitative Bone Specific ALP assay please refer to the Bone Metabolism Section). We also offer a Faecal Calprotectin service.
