The Aldosterone and Renin laboratory is a member of the Supra-Regional Assay Service. The service was established to investigate disorders of aldosterone production, which often result in significant effects on salt and water balance, leading to clinical disturbance of blood pressure and electrolyte levels. Initial diagnosis and differentiation of these conditions requires concomitant measurement of plasma renin activity (PRA). PRA is also useful in the management of renal artery stenosis, diagnosis and location of renin secreting tumours, and in the monitoring of mineralocorticoid replacement therapy.
The service moved from St Mary’s to the Charing Cross Hospital site in 2011 and receives requests from over 50 hospitals nationwide, as well as significant local demand. The service is renowned for its consistent quality of results, as demonstrated by QA schemes, and especially for the quality of extensive clinical interpretative comments on reports. Full interpretation is provided (depending on the information provided) on all results and particularly those of adrenal vein catheterisation studies for localisation of autonomous aldosterone production.
