Test Background

PTH rP is a fetal peptide closely related to PTH which maintains the fetus hypercalcaemic to the mother. It is occasionally produced by tumours and can be a cause of hypercalcaemia of malignancy.

Clinical Indications

Unexplained hypercalcaemia, particularly in patients with known carcinomas.

Additional tests may be added by discussion with the relevant laboratory. The time limit for adding additional tests to a sample already received in the laboratory will depend on the type of sample and the department it was sent to.
