Category Immunology
Test background

Measurement of serum tryptase levels is used to confirm mast cell degranulation.
The test does not distinguish between anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions.
Tryptase levels may be significantly raised after an acute reaction that involves mast cell degranulation and then return to within normal range.
In order to assess the significance of an elevated serum Tryptase result, it is important to take a baseline samples when the patient has fully recovered.
