Albumin is produced in the liver and circulates as the major protein component of plasma. It is indexed to nutritional status in addition to inflammation, maintains the colloid osmotic pressure of the blood compartment, transports an array of proteins and other compounds, and is involved in the buffering and sequestering of toxic compounds.
