Creatinine (urine)

Category Biochemistry
Test background

Clearance of creatinine from the blood may be monitored as a function of glomerular filtration rate as creatinine is almost entirely filtered at the kidney (with the exception of that which is produced by the kidney). As such, comparison of serum and urine creatinine allows the assessment of renal (filtering) function and may be more accurate than the MDRD eGFR calculation (assuming adequate collection of urine).

Clinical Indications

Monitoring of established renal disease.

Reference range

Creatinine clearance 80-140 mL/min
24 hour male 9-17 mmol/24 h
24 hour female 7-13 mmol/24 h
Sample & container required 24 hour urine collection
Sample volume 24 hour urine collection
Turnaround time 2 days
