Crossmatch (issue of red cells)

Patients require cross matched blood for a number of reasons (Surgical procedures, trauma etc) Cross matched blood is issued on a named patient basis and is available for a limited time period.

Clinical Indications

To provide compatible red cells for transfusion as required

Sample & container required EDTA (lavender top)
Sample volume 4 mL for paediatrics; 6 mL for adults
Turnaround time A minimum of 24 hours, preferably 48 hours, is required for non-urgent transfusions. Otherwise dependent on clinical requirement.
Notes

The patient must have two blood group samples taken on separate occasions before blood can be issued. May be referred to the NHS Blood and Transplant service for further testing.
