Crossmatch (issue of red cells)
Patients require cross matched blood for a number of reasons (Surgical procedures, trauma etc) Cross matched blood is issued on a named patient basis and is available for a limited time period.
To provide compatible red cells for transfusion as required
|Sample & container required||EDTA (lavender top)|
|Sample volume||4 mL for paediatrics; 6 mL for adults|
|Turnaround time||A minimum of 24 hours, preferably 48 hours, is required for non-urgent transfusions. Otherwise dependent on clinical requirement.|
The patient must have two blood group samples taken on separate occasions before blood can be issued. May be referred to the NHS Blood and Transplant service for further testing.
