Test background |
Patients require cross matched blood for a number of reasons (Surgical procedures, trauma etc) Cross matched blood is issued on a named patient basis and is available for a limited time period. |
Clinical Indications |
To provide compatible red cells for transfusion as required |
Sample & container required | EDTA (lavender top) |
Sample volume | 4 mL for paediatrics; 6 mL for adults |
Turnaround time | A minimum of 24 hours, preferably 48 hours, is required for non-urgent transfusions. Otherwise dependent on clinical requirement. |
Notes | The patient must have two blood group samples taken on separate occasions before blood can be issued. May be referred to the NHS Blood and Transplant service for further testing. |
