Test background |
It may be useful to perform extended red cell phenotyping to identify further potential antibodies. This may not be possible if the patient has been recently transfused. The following antigens should be tested for: C, c, D, E, e, M, N, S, s, K, k, Fya, Fyb, Jka, Jkb. |
Clinical Indications |
To establish the minor red blood cell antigens in patients with red cell antibodies or those who are regularly transfused. |

Sample & container required | EDTA (lavender top) |
Sample volume | 4 mL for paediatrics; 6 mL for adults |
Turnaround time | Dependent on clinical requirement. Contact the laboratory to discuss further. |
Notes | This test may be referred to a reference laboratory for additional testing. May be referred to the NHS Blood and Transplant service for confirmation if necessary. |
