Anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA), which are directed against components of mitochondrial dehydrogenase complexes, are detected by indirect immunofluorescence using mouse liver/kidney/stomach (LKS) substrate. Positive results are then tested by liver immunoblot for confirmation. |

Mitochondrial antibodies are associated with primary biliary cirrhosis AMA are also detected in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection and systemic sclerosis |
