Test background

Anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA), which are directed against components of mitochondrial dehydrogenase complexes, are detected by indirect immunofluorescence using mouse liver/kidney/stomach (LKS) substrate. Positive results are then tested by liver immunoblot for confirmation.

Clinical Indications

Mitochondrial antibodies are associated with primary biliary cirrhosis AMA are also detected in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection and systemic sclerosis
