Pneumococcal serotypes

Category Immunology
Test background

This test measures the antibody level of each of the 23 capsular serotypes of Streptococcus pneumonia and is used to assess vaccine response in patients with suspected immune deficiency and in the assessment of patients with specific polysaccharide antibody deficiency.

This assay identifies response to serotypes only covered by the polysaccharide (T cell independent) vaccine (serotypes 8, 9N, 12F, 15B) alongside those serotypes found in the protein conjugate vaccine (serotypes 1, 3, 4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18c, 19A, 23F).

Clinical Indications

Investigation of primary and secondary immunodeficiency

Reference range

The putative level of protection for each serotype is ≥0.35 µg/ml
Following vaccination with Pneumovax it is expected that at least 7/13 serotypes achieve levels of ≥0.35 µg/ml.

Ranges verified by referral laboratory

Sample & container required Serum (RST rust top)
Sample volume 5-10 mL blood (1 mL serum)
