Red cell antibody screen

Test background

The presence of red cell antibodies circulating within the patient's plasma could result in the destruction of any transfused red cells expressing those particular antigens.

Clinical Indications

To determine if there are any red cell antibodies of potential clinical significance.

Reference range

Negative (ie. no circulating antibodies).

Sample & container required EDTA (lavender top)
Sample volume 4 mL for paediatrics; 6 mL for adults
Turnaround time Routine 4 hours; Urgent 45 mins
Notes

This is a different tube to the FBC.
ON NO ACCOUNT will the sample be shared.
May be referred to the NHS Blood and Transplant service for confirmation if necessary.
