Test background |
The S-100 protein family of acidic calcium binding proteins consists of 17 monomers, each of which exhibits a unique pattern of tissue-specific expression. Two of the monomeric proteins, S-100A1 and S-100B, are found in high concentrations in the nervous system of vertebrates. These two monomers form either homo- or hetero-dimers; S-100B is present in high concentrations in glial and Schwann cells. Several studies have demonstrated the value of S-100 in the management of patients with malignant melanoma. |
