Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)

Test background

SHBG is a protein that is produced by the liver and binds tightly to the hormones testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and oestradiol, and transports them in the blood in an inactive form. Low concentrations in women may correspond with higher free testosterone concentrations leading to virilisation, while high levels in men (and conversely low free testosterone) is associated with impaired fertility, libido and erectile dysfunction.
