A subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is bleeding into the subarachnoid space surrounding the brain. It may arise spontaneously or due to trauma and is a medical emergency which can lead to death or severe disability, even if recognised and treated in an early stage. Haemoglobin from blood in CSF converts to bilirubin after 12 hours, and spectrophotometric measurement of bilirubin can confirm a suspected SAH. |
